Embodied Change

Introducing the Embodied Change Framework

Your Transformation Starts Here

Professional growth chart

We often think of change as something that happens in a single moment.

A breakthrough.

A big decision.

An inspiring conversation.

A new beginning.

These moments can be powerful.  But lasting change is rarely created by one experience alone. More often, real transformation unfolds gradually.  It begins with awareness, grows into intentional action, and becomes lasting when new ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving become part of everyday life.

At Flying Changes Coach & HRD Retreats we have developed the Embodied Change Framework.  And whether we are working together one-on-one, as a part of a group this framework supports the work we do. The same neuroscience principles that apply to building high performing teams and great leaders will help you get your personal (and professional) life back on track.

The Embodied Change Framework

for Lasting Transformation

Through my years of working with people to navigate change, whether that be in a large scale organizational change, with a team, or in personal/professional life, I've noticed that we all go through transformation in three distinct phases.

  • Awareness: because we can't change what we don't notice.

  • Alignment: because insight alone doesn't create change, and change has to fit in order to stick.

  • Integration: because change only lasts when it becomes a consistent practice.

If we stop at Awareness, nothing changes.

If we stop at Alignment, change doesn't stick.

Only when we Integrate does true transformation occur.

We call it Embodied Change because lasting change isn't something you simply understand.  You feel it.  It is who you become. It moves beyond insight and intention into your nervous system, into your body, your choices, your behaviors, and the way you show up in the world.

Change becomes embodied when you no longer have to remember to do it. It is simply who you are.

I'll take you briefly through each of the phases of the embodied Change Framework.

Awaken

Every meaningful change begins with awareness.

Before we can create something new, we first need to understand what already exists. Many of the patterns shaping our lives operate below conscious awareness.

The stories we tell ourselves.

Our beliefs.

The assumptions we make.

The habits we've repeated for years.

The ways our nervous system has learned to respond to challenge, uncertainty, and change.

None of these patterns is "good" or "bad." Most began as intelligent adaptations: ways your mind and body learned to keep you safe, connected, or successful. The problem isn't that these patterns exist. The challenge is that many continue operating long after they've stopped serving us.

Awakening is the process of bringing those patterns into awareness with curiosity instead of judgment.

Self-awareness isn't a "soft skill". It's everything. When you study yourself with both curiosity and intention you can decode your life as if it were your operating system. Because it is. Patterns, beliefs, triggers, fears, anxiety. Each one you recognize builds awareness. Once you see it you can't un-see it; and it can no longer hide under excuses or blame. It demands understanding. And once you understand, it lets go. Work on one, then the next, until you completely understand every feeling you have, every action you take, every thought in your head. Until nothing happens inside of you that you don't understand. That's AWAKENING. From there you have the power to be unstoppable, unflappable, unf*ckwithable.

Awake.

Alignment

Awareness without action changes nothing.

We've all had moments when we understood exactly what needed to change, and still found ourselves repeating the same patterns. That's because change isn't simply a cognitive process. It also requires our body and nervous system to experience something new.

Alignment is the practice of bringing your thoughts, emotions, values, body, and actions into greater harmony. It is where intention begins to influence behavior.

Insight is only the beginning.

You can know your patterns. You can understand your triggers. You can identify every belief that's been quietly running your life. But if you continue to make decisions from fear instead of purpose, from survival instead of values and thriving, your life won't change. You'll simply become more aware of the disconnect and why it isn't changing. Alignment is where your inner world and outer world begin to match. It's where you start to make choices that reflect your values. You set boundaries reflecting your self-worth. You are starting to develop habits that will support the future you're creating instead of protecting the past you're trying to outgrow. This isn't about forcing yourself to become someone new. It's about removing everything that keeps you from being who you've always been underneath the conditioning, expectations, and protective patterns. Every aligned choice strengthens the next one.Your nervous system begins to trust you because your actions become consistent with your intentions. You become more confident. Confidence isn't something you think your way into; it's something you build one aligned decision at a time. That's ALIGNMENT. Where knowing becomes doing. Where intention becomes identity. Where change stops feeling like something you're trying to achieve and starts becoming who you are.

Aligned.

Integrate

Change isn't measured in the moment.

It is measured by what remains months later.

One meaningful experience can change your perspective. Consistent practice changes your life. Integration is where insight becomes habit. It is where learning moves beyond the retreat and becomes part of everyday living.

Your brain and nervous system are designed to return to what's familiar. In times of stress we naturally return to old patterns. Research tells us our brains remain capable of change throughout our lives. This is why the third phase in the Embodied Change Framework is Integrate. Integration helps make your new patterns familiar.

Integration is the practice of gently choosing again. Again, you notice. Again, you regulate. Again, you align your actions with what you value most, rather than your current emotional state.

States pass. Values hold.

You didn't get it wrong the first time. Every repetition strengthens the new neural pathways you're creating. Over time, what required conscious effort becomes automatic. Taking steps to calm yourself become familiar. Being calm becomes familiar. Healthy boundaries become natural. Self-trust becomes your default. I used to let the stress of life take me over. Then I started consciously practicing deep breathing to calm my nervous system when I was stressed, angry, anxious, etc. Now, when I am stressed I automatically practice deep breathing. I don't even think about it. Over time, re-regulation of my nervous system became my habit, my normal. Your goal isn't to be perfect. Your goal is to notice, and build a practice that brings you back to yourself when life ... lifes. That's INTEGRATION. The daily practice of becoming. Change stops being something you do. It becomes who you are. Every time we practice a new behavior, notice a familiar pattern, regulate our nervous system, or choose a different response, we're strengthening new neural pathways.

In other words:

The more we practice, the more natural those patterns become.

Integrated.

It's a Spiral, Not a Line

Awaken. Align. Integrate. Repeat. Embodied Change isn't linear. It's a spiral.

As you integrate, you become more aware. You notice sooner when when you've drifted out of alignment: something feels off, an old pattern returns, your actions no longer reflect your values.

And because you've practiced, you know what to do. You Awaken to what's happening. You Align with what matters. You Integrate through practice.

Then life changes. You change. And the spiral begins again. Always growing, and now with more awareness, more wisdom, and a deeper understanding of yourself.

This isn't something you master and move on from. Mastering the practice means that you move with it. It moves with you. It becomes the way you move through life. Not something you do. Someone you are.

You.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.  Please respond and let me know if any part of this spoke to you.

What is a Flying Change?

Known as a flying lead change, it is a high level move in horsemanship when a horse, mid-flight changes their lead leg in the canter or lope from right to left, or vice versa.  It requires a great deal of balance and equilibrium, openness to a new way of moving, willingness to suspend an old pattern and pick up a new one while continuing to move forward, a quiet mind, an open heart, and faith in one's own ability.
