The Somatic Science of Change

Change isn’t just something we decide to do.

It’s something we become.

Change is a full-body experience. Whether you’re navigating a career shift, healing old patterns, or redefining your purpose, transformation begins in the nervous system, not in your head.

Somatic science shows that transformation starts in the nervous system. When we learn to read the body’s signals, regulate our state, and ground safety from within, change stops feeling like an uphill battle and starts feeling like flow.

Why the Body Leads the Way

Our bodies are exquisite record keepers. They hold every story we’ve ever lived, and if we want to write a new one, we have to include them in the process. Every emotion, stressor, and unspoken “I’ll deal with that later”, or "I'm fine" (when you're clearly not) leaves a trace in our physiology. Over time, those imprints shape our posture, our breath, the pain we hold in our bodies, even how we see ourselves. Somatic science, the study of how the body and mind interact, shows that true change requires more than intellectual insight.

It requires embodied awareness.

The Neuroscience Connection

When we experience challenge, our survival systems fire first. The brain’s amygdala triggers protective patterns (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) that keep us from taking new steps forward. Our pre-frontal cortex (complex & innovative thought) and hippocampus (new learning) are temporarily disconnected. Through somatic practices like grounding, breathwork, and mindful movement, we send real-time feedback to the nervous system: “I’m safe enough to grow.” This physiological safety is the gateway to sustainable behavioral change. We regain access to the pre-frontal cortex and hippocampus to develop solutions and learn from the experience.

From Knowing to Embodying

At Flying Changes Coach, we integrate somatic science with coaching principles to bridge the gap between what you know and what you feel. You learn to recognize your body’s signals, interrupt old loops, and anchor new, empowered patterns. When your nervous system feels supported, your mind can lead with clarity and your actions align with purpose.

The Takeaway

Change doesn’t happen by force. It unfolds through presence.

When we include the body in the conversation, transformation stops being theoretical. It becomes lived, felt, and lasting.

I invite you to explore how your body can become your most powerful tool for sustainable change.

Try This: A 2-Minute Somatic Reset

  1. Pause. Let your eyes soften and notice where your body meets the ground or chair.

  2. Exhale first. Release a long, steady breath out through your mouth, like a quiet sigh.

  3. Inhale slowly through your nose, feeling the rise in your belly or ribs.

  4. Sense and name one area of your body that feels supported, warm, or open. Stay with that sensation for a few breaths.

  5. Notice what shifts. Even small awareness changes begin to rewire your nervous system for calm, clarity, and forward movement.

If you tried the Somatic Reset, let me know what shifted for you?

What is a Flying Change?

Known as a flying lead change, it is a high level move in horsemanship when a horse, mid-flight changes their lead leg in the canter or lope from right to left, or vice versa.  It requires a great deal of balance and equilibrium, openness to a new way of moving, willingness to suspend an old pattern and pick up a new one while continuing to move forward, a quiet mind, an open heart, and faith in one's own ability.
